Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy enjoys a unique position among the ëwar poetsí. As an army padrČ, he saw at first-hand the suffering of the men around him and decided that he would write about it. He also knew and understood that, in order for the men to appreciate him, he must fully share their experiences. This decision took him into the front-line trenches at the height of battles and into No Manís Land during fierce bombardments. His selfless devotion to the men earnt him their respect and love as he became the most famous army padrČ of the war. In addition, the men gave him a nickname: Woodbine Willie.
