John McCrae holds a unique position in the history of the First World War in that he is remembered as the man who gave us the poppy as a national symbol of remembrance. This Canadian doctor had experienced war prior to arriving in the trenches of France, and his military experience stood him in good stead.

‚Äö?ѬÆHis famous poem In Flanders Fields provided the world with an image of the fallen and a means of remembering them which has lasted to this day. Here we provide an in-depth biography detailing his childhood and education in Canada, his military service in South Africa and the First World War and his eventual death in January 1918.
