Biography of Robert Ernest Vern?©de (1875-1917)
Robert Ernest Vern?©de was considerably older than many of his fellow soldiers, having enlisted at the age of thirty-nine, and it is this maturity which gives his poetry an unusual and interesting perspective. He was almost always optimistic, reflecting a caring attitude towards his men, as well as a sense of the justice of his country's cause. Following his death, his widow Caroline, published his letters and these demonstrate the personality behind the poetry, as well as the depth of their love for one another. Here we offer a detailed biography of Vern?©de's life before and during the First World War.
